I love the original, even with the flaws, but am excited to hear what Martin and engineers do with the remix. This is why the news of a remix is so interesting. I always assumed the sound was baked in to the mix, meaning a remaster would not help matters. At least it wasn’t overcompressed, but the loudness wars didn’t exist in 1987. I’m sure others with more knowledge and lexical abilities can elaborate on what’s wrong with the sound on Brave Words, but to me it is too drenched in reverb, vocals are buried and the EQ further mushes all the instruments into a wash that robs it of any punch and clarity. Incredibly good news for us Chills fans who got a taste of how good this record could potentially sound with the remixed version of Wet Blanket included on the Heavenly Pop Hits - The Best of The Chills compilation, but that was in 1994! Stand by, more release details and other info will be announced in the coming months. We may have gotten to the bottom of this already, but if anyone has any further information please email us. As Martin says above, we are asking anyone who worked or recorded at The Point Studios, Belgravia, London in the late’80s to have a think and a look around just in case it can be located. Work is underway on these tracks, but we still need to locate the third reel. As per Martin's instagram post above, we have most of the original multi-track tapes and these have have been digitised via the Alexander Turnbull Library. Very good news indeed! We are working with Martin and The Chills on a new reissue of Brave Words. After a recent Instagram posting from thechillsnz announcing that the reissue will happen, Flying Nun sent this notice out in their newsletter: THE CHILLS - BRAVE WORDS UPDATE Now that the prospects of FINALLY seeing this classic record remixed and reissued are looking imminent, it seems appropriate to get a thread going about it.
